Coastal Comic Con is the brainchild of MakeGeek CIC, the community interest company that exists to support and encourage creativity within the South Dorset area.

Coastal Comic Con was created to give a welcoming and family-friendly convention experience to people across the whole spectrum of geekdom.

We recognise that the convention atmosphere can sometimes be daunting, or can make people feel excluded at times, and wished to create an event that everyone could enjoy, regardless of age, race, gender or sexuality.

Coastal Comic Con aims to be a welcoming space to anyone – including individuals on the Autism Spectrum, those with physical or mental disabilities, and others who struggle with social interaction.

Coastal Comic Con is an event that is all about community – whether it is the community of family, the local area or people coming together through their mutual appreciation for traditionally ‘geeky’ activities, such as gaming or cosplay. We believe that the event should be a space where people can connect with others who share their passions, their hobbies, and their views on the world without fear of judgement.

We encourage local fans and creators, as well as groups and organisations, to come together at the event. The ethos of Coastal Comic Con is not to design the convention around our needs, but look to the needs of the con-goer and the vendors and artists who attend to ensure it is as open and inclusive to all as it can possibly be.

Our goal is that Coastal Comic Con should be an experience of universal physical safety; a place free from harassment and harassing behaviours and a space that is open minded, inclusive, and accepting of all people and all forms of geekdom.

For attendees we offer ‘Safe Spaces’ within the convention that can be made to be places of heightened physical, intellectual, and/or emotional security.

If you feel you need some of that security, please talk to one of our team members who will be able to assist anyone who is feeling harassed or threatened and convey you to a safe space if needed or desired. Coastal Comic Con promise that assistance will be provided to anyone who seeks it, without judgement and without expressions of doubt.

With all this in mind, we hope that Coastal Comic Con will be the first of many inclusive events for the geek family in the area.

From the outset, we have aimed and planned for CoCoCon to be one of the most inclusive and accessible conventions out there. We welcome attendees of all abilities and disabilities.

However, due to the age and layout of our beautiful venue (a 180 year old listed building!) we have unfortunately faced some challenges regarding accessibility. Although we are working hard behind the scenes to ensure that there is access to all areas of the hotel, we do recognise, and want to raise awareness ahead of time, that there may be some complications on the day. This is especially the case for attendees who require the use of larger mobility aids such as larger wheelchairs and mobility scooters. We are deeply sorry about this. We are continuing to work very hard alongside the hotel to try to mitigate this and aim to go above and beyond what the venue themselves offer.

Above all we want everyone to have the best experience, and the best convention they possibly can! Therefore we will have an on-site welfare team to assist anyone in need, and we would ask that any attendees with mobility issues make themselves known to our stewards to guide and help them throughout the day.

We are very much looking forward to seeing the wonderful community at Coastal Comic Con and hope that it will be a fantastic day for everyone involved!
